Always thought Eto'o was top class. Was shocked when Barcsa sold him. Although he was a menace striker glad he played for my club Chelsea.

Etoo was so clinical in front of the goal. I feel like the great Messi we have today is a combination of Etoo and Ronaldinho game styles. He learnt from the bests.

This doesn't cope well with what is said about Messi. When he joined barca, youth trainers attested him that everything is already in place, except for his physicality. Ofc he learned of eto'o and dinho, but not in the skill department. When Dino whon 2005 Ballon d'or he said in an interview afterwards: "this trophy sais I'm the best player in the world, but I'm not even the best player at Barcelona". And this was in December 2005...

Javier Navas he deserved 2 ballon d'or, 2006 not Cannavaro and 2009, even if Messi deserved too, Eto'o was the best. Everybody saw it when he won another trebble with Inter Milan.

How didn't he win the ballon d'or ? He was without the shadow of a doubt the best striker of his generation (2004-2011). For me his peak is clearly the 05-06 season. That season he was clearly even more productive than Ronaldinho and was the big games player of Barcelona when it mattered. Ronaldinho and Eto'o had won the UCL for Barça in 2006 but Eto'o was a little bit more consistent and better in the big games as the UCL final against Arsenal. I really think he deserved that ballon d'or instead Cannavaro. He could also get it in 2009 after the trebble of Barcelona because when he joined Inter, he won another trebble back to back. So, even if Messi deserved, I think Eto'o was the more influenced at that time because he was clearly the best striker in the world, won two trebbles back to back and had a better carreer than Messi. For me, Eto'o deserved ballon d'or in 2006 and 2009, but as a Barça's fan I know his peak was 2006, he should have won it to leave Messi in 2009 who deserved too with his great season.

EMISOR555 You're absolutly right. In 2009, Eto'o and Messi had the same goals statistics. Maybe Messi provided a little bit more assists, but Eto'o was the 1st defender of Barcelona, his workrate was so incredible than he was statistically the striker who recovered the biggest amount of balls, more than a lot of miedfielders and defenders. He was the best big games player of Barcelona (I remember he single handedly won the final against Man Utd in 2009) and when he leaved Barcelona, he won directly a second trebble consecutively by knocking Barcelona out of UCL just to prove he was the best one. Messi deserved too but Eto'o had a better carreer, better achievements and had done a lot of great season, not Messi. So, Eto'o was the best choice in 2009. He deserved at least 2 golden ball: 2006 and 2009.
